Meetting on soils with mediterranean type of climate

Événement grand public et professionnels / Lieu : Marrakech - Maroc
The Mediterranean region is characterized from north to south by a wide range of climate and landscape diversity, resulting in a variety of soil types with different characteristics and behaviour. The long history of agriculture in this region, starting from the ancient Egyptian dynasties to the modern third millennium societies, induced substantial changes in land use and land quality status. The climatic changes as well as the increasing anthropic pressure are both threatening the sustainability of the soils and leading to desertification, especially in the southern Mediterranean region.

Often, the lack of comprehensive soil resource information limits the ability of scientists, advisors, and farmers to make better decisions, regarding the adaptation of specific land use types that could optimise crop production together with minimizing soil degradation and protection of the environment.

Sustainable land management in the contest of Sustainable development is a major challenge at regional as well as global levels. It requires that the “soil” be considered (by both soil-scientists and non-soil-scientists) as a natural resource of our ecosystems and deserves a better understanding of its spatial distribution, characteristics, and behaviour with respect to both internal and external abiotic and biotic factors. The availability of such information undoubtedly requires more fundamental and applied soil research efforts, the development of common soil database, as well as the innovative ways of soil information delivery and outreach for different kind of users and decision makers.

In this regard, the Moroccan Association of Soil Science (AMSSOL) in collaboration with the International Working group on SMTC is hosting the 8th IMSMTC in Marrakech, Morocco, with the central topic of “Soil information: a basis for better land management and prevention of desertification in the Mediterranean environments”.

The Meeting is organized by AMSSOL in collaboration with the Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (IAV) of Rabat, the National School of Agriculture of Meknès (ENA), and the Soil and Water Conservation Network of Morocco.
