Workshop on Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology

Événement réservée aux professionnels / Lieu : Goa - India

The problem of marine pollution due to various types of contaminants such as organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) petroleum hydrocarbons (PAHs),  polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins (PCDDs), toxic elements (mercury, cadmium, arsenic, cobalt, manganese, copper, etc) has become a global concern because of  accumulation of their residues in the tissues of various species of marine organisms and biomagnification through the foodchain leading to hazards to human health. The impact of such toxic compounds, in general, is of great importance in terms of their behaviour and fate in the environment. The effect of contaminants can be correlated with their active concentrations in the biophase (i.e. body compartment where the contaminant exerts its effect; the contaminants then turns into being a pollutant) leading to significant changes in the biological responses. In order to detect and assess the impact of pollution, particularly low concentrations of increasingly complex mixtures of contaminants on environmental quality, the current trend of biomarker research has drawn worldwide attention.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together the environmental scientists, ecotoxicologists, educationists, policymakers and the students on one platform to discuss and highlight recent advances in marine pollution and eco-toxicology and their relevance to developing countries.
