Brussels, 29 May, 2012 - The next 18th June, prizes for the best energy saver participating in the European Citizens Climate Cup will be awarded. The European Citizens Climate Cup (ECCC), supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe programme, is a competition of householders within and between countries aiming to achieve the highest energy saving. The project tries to demonstrate that everybody can save energy significantly and reach the reduction targets set by the European Union. The ECCC awards ceremony will take place on 18th June at the EuroRégion Alpes Mediterranée Office during the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) when hundreds of organisations and individuals are gathering at Energy Day events and participating in activities that promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources around Europe.

The European Citizen Climate Cup brought together more than 10,000 participating households and around 25,000 citizens from 11 countries and regions. Participants have had one year to implement in their own houses strategies and measures to reduce their overall energy consumption - the greater the reduction the bigger their chance of winning the competition.

Therefore the ECCC award ceremony will be the occasion to award the European winner of the Climate Cup, the country with the highest energy saving. Additionally each country will elect the “Energy Saver of the Year” – the household with the highest reduction in CO2 emissions and the most convincing energy saving measures. The event will be attended by members of the European Parliament from all participating countries as the jury of the competition, and the European Commission, a great opportunity to a multilevel meeting between European citizens and the European institutions.

The first edition of the award ceremony of the European Citizen Climate Cup will showcase outstanding examples of households from each participating country or region and will bring Europe closer to its citizens thanks to the support of the EU institutions.
